A celebration of life will be held for Ruth Fishel at 2 PM on April 28, 2006 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche, SD with the Reverend Buck Malone officiating. A time of remembrances will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 PM at the church. Visitation will be held from 4 - 7 PM on Thursday at the church, and one hour before services on Friday.
Ruth Alice (Cole) Fishel was born May 11, 1911 in a prairie shack one mile east of Orman Dam to Peter and Alice (Mullenger) Cole. She graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1929. In 1931 she earned a two year teaching certificate from Spearfish Normal School. Before her marriage, Ruth taught at the Crow Peak School ,the Leitner School, and the Erickson School. On February 4, 1933, she married Floyd F. Fishel. Five children were born to this union. Ruth and Floyd ranched west of Belle Fourche until his death in 1964. Ruth resumed her career, teaching at Fruitdale, Piedmont and at Gillette, WY. She retired in 1976. She was a member of the Congregational Church for 86 years; a founding member of Westside Extension Club and Senior Citizens Bowling, and a charter member of the Belle Fourche Area Community Center where she taught an exercise and swim class for seniors.
Ruth is survived by her children: Charles and Diana Fishel, Littleton, CO; Ardis and Glenn Riley, Spearfish; Jean and Gary Helmer, Belle Fourche and Dan Fishel and Rosie Kane, Belle Fourche; by a sister, Lillian Cole, Spearfish, SD; Sister-in-law, Louise Cole, Berkeley, CA; by grandchildren: David (Angie) Fishel, Bend, Oregon; Carla (David) Herbig, Fredericksburg, TX; Bruce Riley, Orlando, FL; Roger (Ruth) Riley, Spearfish, SD; Dr. Kate Riley, San Luis Obispo, CA; Brent (Cindy) Riley, Spearfish, SD; Dr. Lorri Riley, St. Petersburg, FL; Rev. Patti (Rev. Chuck) Aurand, Mason City, IA; Bill Helmer, Sioux Falls, SD; Wendy Stedman, Missoula, MT; Tim Fishel, Sheridan, WY; Sandra Kane, Belle Fourche, and Steven Kane, Belle Fourche; great-grandchildren: Logan, Brady and Quinn Fishel; Alex and Tait Fishel; Bryan, Carmen, and Adele Riley; Cole and Hannah Riley; Dory and Charlie Aurand; Carson Helmer; Dakota, Grayson and Olivia Stedman; Keegan Fishel; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by honorary great-grand-daughter Jordan Aspen, daughter of Brian and Teresa Aspen.
The Fishel's Group "Exercise Girls" of the Belle Fourche Area Community Center, and the members of the Adult Bible Study Class are honorary pall bearers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Floyd, son Jerry, sister Katherine Wallace, brother, David Cole, a granddaughter, and a great-grandson.
Memorials have been established to the First Congregational Church UCC, to Hospice of the Northern Hills, or to a memorial of your choice.
The Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche is in charge of the arrangements.
